The reformer and sage Dayananda Saraswati, founder of the Arya Samaj, proclaimed with clarity of vision: “God is absolutely holy and wise. His nature, attributes, and power are all holy. He is omnipresent, incorporeal, unborn, immense, omniscient, omnipotent, merciful and just. He is the maker, protector, and destroyer of worlds.” In these words, he brought forth the ancient truths of the Vedas, stripped of superstition, and presented a vision of the Divine both awe-inspiring and pure. Here is no idol of stone nor figure of fancy, but the eternal, infinite, all-encompassing God whose being is truth itself.

The first mystery he reveals is the holiness and wisdom of God. To say that God is holy is to say that He is utterly set apart, free from flaw, radiant in perfection. To say He is wise is to affirm that every act of creation, every law of nature, every unfolding of time is not chance, but guided by eternal knowledge. Thus, the rising of the sun, the growth of the seed, the fall of empires—all bear witness to a wisdom far beyond man’s grasp. And this wisdom, unlike human cunning, is bound forever to holiness, never corrupted, never unjust.

Dayananda also declares the attributes of the Divine: omnipresence, incorporeality, unborn and immense. To the ancient mind, bound to images and forms, this was a thunderous reminder that the Creator cannot be confined to temples or idols. God is not in one place; He is in all places. And yet, this overwhelming might is tempered by mercy and justice. He is merciful, lifting the weak, forgiving the repentant. He is just, rewarding the good and bringing down the proud. In this balance of mercy and justice lies the very fabric of moral order, the assurance that the universe is not chaos but harmony.

History itself confirms the weight of this teaching. When empires have risen in arrogance, believing themselves supreme, they have fallen under the greater law of the Divine. Recall Ashoka the Great, who after the bloody conquest of Kalinga, turned to righteousness, acknowledging that true kingship must reflect the justice and mercy of God. His transformation from destroyer to protector mirrored the eternal attributes Dayananda described. And so the destiny of nations is bent beneath the moral hand of the Maker, Protector, and Destroyer of worlds.

The meaning for us is both humbling and empowering. Humbling, because we stand small before the immense and eternal God, whose wisdom and holiness are beyond us. Empowering, because we are called to reflect His attributes in our own lives—to be just in judgment, merciful in dealings, wise in choices, and pure in heart. If God is the pattern of holiness, then man is the vessel meant to bear His reflection.

The practical path is this: worship God not in empty rituals, but in spirit and truth. Live each day remembering His omnipresence, so that no act is hidden, no word forgotten. Practice mercy, for He is merciful; practice justice, for He is just. Guard your heart from arrogance, for only He is omnipotent; walk with humility, for only He is immense. And in times of creation, protection, and destruction—whether of nations, of families, or of self—trust that His hand rules over all.

Thus Dayananda’s words endure as both theology and exhortation. They lift the mind to the heavens, and they bind the heart to righteousness. They remind us that God is not a relic of superstition, but the eternal, living reality: holy, wise, omnipresent, merciful, and just. And if we live in the light of this vision, then we, too, shall be shaped into vessels of holiness, and our lives will echo the eternal rhythm of the Maker, Protector, and Destroyer of worlds.
