His words echo across the ages like a temple bell, calling not for wealth, not for glory, but for great thoughts and a pure heart — the twin pillars upon which the noble spirit stands. For in these two things lie all the treasures of heaven and earth: the clarity to see truth and the strength to live it. What are gold and crowns beside a heart unstained, or power beside a mind illuminated by wisdom? These are the gifts worth asking of God — the gifts that endure when all else fades to dust.

To ask for great thoughts is to seek the fire of vision — the power to look beyond the veil of the ordinary and see the eternal pattern woven through all things. Such thoughts do not spring from pride or ambition, but from a yearning to understand the divine order of the world. Goethe himself was a seeker of this light: a poet, a scientist, a philosopher. He sought truth not to triumph in debate, but to better the soul. When condemned by the city he had taught, he forgave it. When faced with death, he did not curse his fate but accepted it with serenity. In that final act, he revealed what Goethe meant: the true power of man lies not in cleverness, but in the union of wisdom and virtue, thought and purity.

For these two — the great thought and the pure heart — are like the wings of a bird. One cannot rise without the other. A heart without thought is blind compassion, easily misled. A mind without purity is cold and cruel, clever in destruction. But when both are united, man becomes as the angels — capable of seeing truth and acting with goodness. This, then, is the divine harmony Goethe speaks of: the marriage of intellect and spirit, reason and love, heaven and earth within the soul of man.

So let this teaching be engraved upon your heart: do not pray merely for success, or for safety, or for the fleeting joys of life. Pray instead for great thoughts, that your mind may be a lantern in the dark. Pray for a pure heart, that your hands may do no harm and your lips speak only truth. For when these are yours, you already possess all blessings — wisdom to guide you, peace to sustain you, and love to redeem you. The rest will follow in its season.

And in your daily life, live this prayer. Read deeply, think freely, question bravely — that your thoughts may grow great. Love honestly, forgive swiftly, act kindly — that your heart may stay pure. Do this, and you will not need to seek God in temples or rituals, for He will already dwell within you. For as Goethe knew, the divine lives in the mind that thinks nobly and the heart that loves purely — and in that sacred union, man finds both heaven and himself.
