Hearken, O seeker of wisdom, to the words of George Müller, the servant of God who lived not by sight but by faith. He proclaimed: “If you believe indeed in the Lord Jesus for the salvation of your soul, if you walk uprightly and do not regard iniquity in your heart, if you continue to wait patiently, and believingly upon God; then answers will surely be given to your prayers.” These words are not the empty ornaments of religious speech, but the testimony of a life tested in the furnace of trial, a life that proved the faithfulness of God through thousands of answered petitions.

The origin of Müller’s declaration is found in the path he trod with unwavering belief. He was no mere philosopher of words, but a man of deeds, who raised orphans in Bristol without once asking the world for coin or bread. Instead, he laid his needs before the throne of heaven, believing that the Lord who made the heavens would also provide for the least of His children. Time and again, when cupboards were bare and famine loomed, food arrived at the very hour of need. Thus did Müller learn—and teach—that prayer, when joined with upright living and patient waiting, draws down the arm of heaven itself.

Consider, O listener, the tale of one morning in Müller’s orphan house. The children sat at the long wooden tables, bowls and mugs before them, yet there was no bread, no milk, no provision in sight. But Müller, calm as a rock unmoved by the tide, bade the children bow their heads in prayer, giving thanks for the food that was not yet there. Even as he prayed, there came a knock upon the door. It was the town baker, declaring he had been stirred in the night to bake extra bread for the orphans. Soon after, the milkman’s cart broke down outside the house, and he offered his load lest it spoil. Thus, in the space of moments, the prayer of faith was clothed in reality. The children ate until full, and Müller’s words were proved true: those who believe, walk uprightly, and wait patiently shall see their petitions answered.

What then is the heart of this wisdom? It is that faith is not a fleeting wish, but a steadfast trust in the character of God. To believe in the Lord Jesus is to anchor one’s soul in the eternal promise of salvation, and to walk uprightly is to keep the vessel of one’s life free from the leaks of sin. When the heart is pure and the spirit humble, the prayers that ascend are not clouded by selfishness, but shine like incense before the Most High. And when the answers tarry, the soul must wait, not with despair, but with patience, knowing that the delays of God are not denials, but the ripening of blessings yet unseen.

The ancients themselves bore witness to this truth. Recall Hannah, who wept in the temple for a child, mocked by her rival and barren in her years. She prayed with trembling lips, pouring out her soul, and the Lord answered her with Samuel, who would rise as prophet and judge in Israel. Her story, like Müller’s, proclaims that persistent faith and upright devotion open the gates of heaven. The Eternal One hears, though He may choose the hour of response according to wisdom that mortals cannot fathom.

What lesson then must future generations carry in their hearts? It is this: prayer is not a bargain, but a covenant of trust. It is not a demand flung at the sky, but a surrender into the hands of the Father who knows what we need before we ask. If you would walk in Müller’s footsteps, purify your heart, cast aside the secret sins you guard, and fix your gaze upon Christ. Then bend your knees in prayer, not once in haste, but daily, patiently, with the calm assurance that your words rise to One who hears.

Therefore, let your actions follow your faith. Begin each day with thanksgiving, even before blessings appear. When trials come, do not murmur, but endure with quiet courage, waiting upon God. Let your integrity guard your steps, for the prayers of the upright carry weight in the courts of heaven. And above all, believe—believe not with a passing sigh, but with the steadfast certainty that the Eternal is faithful. For Müller’s life was the living proof of this truth: that the soul who trusts, who walks, and who waits shall never be left without an answer from above.
