It's quite a famous story that takes place on Christmas Eve, and the Germans, French, and Scottish are trying to make peace one night and they bury their dead and they play football. I play a German opera singer, in German, which I never have so I am really excited about that.

Opening Scene – Narrated by Host

The sky outside was a deep shade of violet, the last traces of sunlight slipping away behind the distant mountains. Inside the small, dimly lit café, a soft hum of murmurs filled the air, blending with the tinkling of spoons against cups. Jack sat at a corner table, his broad shoulders hunched, eyes shadowed by the weight of his own thoughts. Jeeny sat across from him, fingers wrapped around her coffee cup, her eyes focused on the swirling steam as if searching for answers in the mist. There was a palpable stillness, the kind that hung heavy before a storm.

Host: The air felt thick with unspoken words, the kind that could break the silence if someone dared speak them. Jack leaned forward, his gray eyes narrowing, ready to voice the thoughts that had been gnawing at him. Jeeny, ever the patient listener, allowed the silence to stretch, waiting for him to unravel his mind.

Jack: “You know, it’s funny… how people can believe in something so desperately. Like peace, for example. It’s almost childish, don’t you think?”

Jeeny: She glanced up, her eyes soft, but sharp. “Childish? That’s a harsh word, Jack. You’re telling me you don’t believe in the possibility of peace? Not even for a night?”

Jack: “A night? What does that even mean? Look, I know the story — the one where they all put down their weapons on Christmas Eve. The Germans, the French, the Scots—supposedly playing football and burying their dead together. It sounds like something out of a fairy tale, Jeeny. A fleeting moment, a delusion.”

Jeeny: She tilted her head slightly, a flicker of defiance in her eyes. “Is it so hard to imagine, Jack? Just for one night, they laid aside their differences and acted like human beings, not enemies. There’s something beautiful in that. Something we could learn from.”

Jack: He leaned back, crossing his arms over his chest, his voice dripping with skepticism. “Beautiful? Or just tragic? They went back to killing each other after that. The illusion of peace only lasted as long as the night. It wasn’t real. It was just a momentary escape from the truth.”

Host: The smell of coffee lingered in the air as the conversation shifted, each word adding weight to the already thick atmosphere. Jeeny’s hands trembled slightly as she set her cup down, her gaze fixed on Jack, steady and unyielding.

Jeeny: “Maybe it wasn’t about the permanence of it, Jack. Maybe it’s about the fact that, for just one night, they chose humanity over hatred. Violence and war are easy. People have always chosen that. But peace—true peace, not just the absence of conflict—requires an effort. It’s a choice.”
