Mass media provides the essential link between the individual and the demands of the technological society.
Hearken to the words of Jacques Ellul, the prophet of modern times, who saw with piercing clarity the bonds that tie man to his machines: “Mass media provides the essential link between the individual and the demands of the technological society.” These words reveal the hidden architecture of our age. For man once lived in villages, where the rhythm of the earth and the voice of his neighbor guided him. But now he is bound in a new order, ruled not by the soil or the seasons, but by the vast and unrelenting technological society. And it is through the channels of mass media that this order speaks to him, shaping his desires, his fears, and even his sense of self.
The individual, left alone, would not know the scale or the speed of this new world. The farmer in his field would not feel the tremors of global markets; the craftsman in his shop would not hear the commands of distant powers. Yet the mass media brings all this into his home, making him a participant in the vast machinery of progress. What was once far becomes near; what was once slow becomes urgent. Thus, Ellul reminds us: without this link, the technological society could not demand obedience, nor could it weave individuals into its grand design.
Consider the rise of radio in the twentieth century. It was not only a tool of entertainment but a herald of power. Franklin Roosevelt’s “fireside chats” brought comfort to millions, binding the hearts of Americans to their president in a time of crisis. But in Germany, the same medium was used by the Nazi regime to flood the homes of ordinary citizens with propaganda, aligning their minds with the demands of the Reich. Here we see Ellul’s wisdom in action: mass media does not merely inform; it connects the individual to the structures of power, for good or for ill.
Nor is this truth confined to the past. Today, the glowing screens in every hand and home carry the voice of the technological society. Through social networks, through endless streams of images and words, each individual is drawn into the current of the machine. We are told what to buy, how to vote, what to fear, and what to desire. It is through this link that the demands of the age are whispered into our hearts, so softly we hardly know they are not our own thoughts. The technological society requires speed, consumption, and conformity—and mass media is its herald.
Yet Ellul does not speak only to condemn. His words are also a call to awareness. To recognize the power of mass media is to break its spell. The individual need not be a slave, if he understands that what he consumes also consumes him. He may choose to question, to discern, to seek truth beyond the noise. In this way, the link becomes not only a chain but also a channel of resistance. Just as the printing press once spread both tyranny and freedom, so too can today’s media be harnessed to awaken as well as to enslave.
The lesson, then, is clear: do not drift blindly in the currents of mass media. Know that each word, each image, each story is part of the great weaving of the technological society. Ask always: who benefits from this message? What demand is being placed upon me? Am I being guided toward wisdom, or merely toward obedience? In such questioning lies the dignity of the individual against the flood of conformity.
Therefore, O listener, let your actions be these: discipline your consumption of mass media; choose not only what entertains you but what enlightens you. Seek voices that challenge rather than flatter. Learn to dwell in silence, so that the voice of your own soul is not drowned by the clamor of machines. And when you speak, speak with truth, so that you become not merely a passive receiver, but an active creator within this vast technological society. For though the link binds us all, it is within your power to decide whether it shall enslave or liberate.
