Saint Augustine, the great thinker of the early Church, proclaimed: Miracles are not contrary to nature, but only contrary to what we know about nature.” In these words lies not contradiction but revelation. For nature is vast, and the human mind is small; what seems to us impossible is not a breach of order, but the unveiling of an order we have not yet understood. A miracle is not chaos invading creation, but the deeper harmony of creation revealing itself to eyes unprepared.

O children of wisdom, hear this: when man beholds a miracle, he cries out, “This cannot be!” Yet it is not the miracle that lies, but man’s limited knowledge. For the sea already knows how to part, the sun already knows how to stand still, the body already carries the seed of healing. The Divine does not break the laws of nature; rather, He shows that our grasp of those laws is but the shadow of truth. The miracle is the widening of vision, the reminder that the universe is vaster and more wondrous than the mind of man can contain.

Consider the tale of the physician Ignaz Semmelweis. In the nineteenth century, he urged doctors to wash their hands before delivering children, for he saw that unseen forces were spreading death. His colleagues scorned him, declaring his claim a fantasy, a miracle without reason. Yet he was right: he had glimpsed the laws of germs before science had named them. What seemed contrary to knowledge was not contrary to nature, but to what men knew of her. Today, every life saved by simple cleanliness bears witness to Augustine’s wisdom.

Think also of the stars. For millennia, men believed the heavens were fixed, eternal, unchanging. To see a star explode into a supernova was once thought a divine omen, a miracle beyond comprehension. Now we know it to be the death of a sun, a fire so great it can outshine galaxies. It is no breach of law but the fulfillment of law—the hidden rhythm of the cosmos revealed. What once appeared to defy nature was only the unveiling of nature’s deeper music.

Thus Augustine speaks to the humility of man: do not hastily dismiss the wondrous as false, nor condemn the mysterious as madness. What you call impossible today may be explained tomorrow. The line between miracle and science is thin, and often it is only the measure of human understanding. To call something a miracle is to admit our ignorance, and yet to honor the greatness of creation.

The lesson, then, is clear: approach life with wonder, but also with humility. Do not boast that your knowledge has encompassed all things, for even the wisest are children at the shore of an infinite sea. Leave room for awe, for mystery, for the possibility that the world is grander than your theories. For in doing so, you open your heart to miracles—whether they be the recovery of the sick, the birth of new stars, or the quiet transformation of a soul.

Therefore, children of tomorrow, cultivate two virtues: curiosity and reverence. Investigate the world with diligence, seeking to expand what you know of nature. But also bow before her mysteries, knowing that what you cannot yet explain is not falsehood, but the edge of discovery. To live in this balance is to walk as both scientist and believer, both seeker and worshiper.

And so remember Augustine’s teaching: the miracle is not against nature—it is against our arrogance. It is the reminder that creation is richer than comprehension, and that the Divine, working through the fabric of nature, will forever surpass the limits of the human mind. In this truth lies both wonder and wisdom, and it is yours to carry forward.
