Hear the words of George Orwell, prophet of clarity and enemy of falsehood: “Sometimes the first duty of intelligent men is the restatement of the obvious.” This is no idle remark, but a call to arms against the corruption of truth. For Orwell, who lived in an age of propaganda, war, and lies dressed as reason, knew that the simplest truths are often the first to be buried. When men are trained to forget what is plain, when they are deceived into doubting what their eyes can see, then it becomes the sacred task of the wise to speak again the obvious, as though it were a revelation.

The origin of this quote rests in Orwell’s lifelong battle against tyranny and deception. In his essays and in works such as 1984 and Animal Farm, he warned that totalitarian power thrives by clouding the obvious. When “freedom” is twisted to mean slavery, when “war” is proclaimed as peace, when cruelty is dressed as virtue, then the people begin to doubt the very ground beneath their feet. In such times, the duty of the intelligent is not to weave elaborate theories, but to affirm what is plain: that two plus two make four, that cruelty is not kindness, that freedom is sacred.

History is rich with such moments. Consider the trial of Galileo. The authorities, cloaked in power and tradition, declared the Earth the center of the universe. Yet Galileo, in the face of mockery and threat, restated the obvious—that the Earth moves around the Sun. What he spoke was not complex, nor hidden to those who studied, but in an age of suppression it became revolutionary simply to affirm the truth. His courage echoes Orwell’s teaching: that intelligence is not only the pursuit of the new, but the defense of the self-evident when it is denied.

So too in the struggles for human dignity. When abolitionists declared that a man cannot be owned like cattle, they were restating the obvious truth of human freedom. Yet in their time, this truth had been drowned by greed and cruelty. Their insistence on the plain reality of human equality shook empires and toppled chains. Likewise, when Martin Luther King Jr. declared, “We are created equal,” he was not inventing a new philosophy; he was awakening the world to a truth long enshrined but long ignored.

The emotional power of Orwell’s words lies in their humility. The intelligent man does not always need to dazzle with novelty. Sometimes the greatest wisdom is simply to remind the world of what it already knows, but has forgotten—or has been forced to forget. In times of confusion, clarity becomes revolutionary. In times of deception, honesty is fire. In times of tyranny, the obvious becomes dangerous, for it unmasks the lies upon which oppression stands.

The lesson for us is clear: do not despise the task of repeating what is simple and true. Do not assume that because something is obvious, it does not need to be said. There are forces in every age that seek to obscure, to twist, to confuse. It may fall to you, in your family, in your community, in your nation, to speak aloud the plain truth: that kindness is better than cruelty, that honesty is stronger than deceit, that justice must be defended. Such words may seem small, but they strike at the heart of falsehood.

So take this into your life: when you see the obvious being denied, do not remain silent. Speak it again, and again, until it is heard. Do not fear being called simple or naïve, for you walk the path of the wise. Remember Orwell’s charge: the first duty of those who see clearly is not to invent new shadows, but to restore the light of what is already known. In this way, you uphold truth, and in truth lies freedom.
