That which is false troubles the heart, but truth brings joyous

The mystic of love and truth, Jalal al-Din Rumi, poured forth rivers of wisdom that still water the thirsty hearts of seekers. Among his many jewels is this radiant line: “That which is false troubles the heart, but truth brings joyous tranquillity.” In these few words he gives us a map of the soul, a compass pointing unfailingly toward peace. For the heart, though it may be deceived for a time, is never at rest in falsehood; it beats in discord, restless and uneasy. But when the heart touches truth, there arises a stillness, a harmony, a joy that is not fleeting but eternal.

To understand this wisdom, we must see that the heart is not only the organ of flesh, but the seat of the spirit, the inner mirror of reality. When we live in falsehood—whether by lying to ourselves, hiding from what is real, or clinging to illusions—the heart is weighed down, troubled as by storm winds. Restlessness comes, anxiety grows, for the soul knows what the mind may deny. But when we live in truth, no matter how difficult or humbling, the heart settles into tranquillity, as a lake settles into stillness after the winds have passed. History gives us shining proof. Consider Abraham Lincoln, who in his youth was offered the chance to profit from dishonest dealings. He turned away, saying that though others might never know, he himself would. Had he chosen the false, his heart would have been troubled, even if his reputation stood. But in holding to the truth, he cultivated a heart of stillness and integrity that later carried him through the storms of civil war. His tranquil strength came not from ease, but from truth’s unshakable foundation.

And consider the reverse: the downfall of Richard Nixon in the Watergate scandal. Here was a man who chose falsehood, who built a tower of deceit to shield himself. For a time it seemed strong, but his heart was never at rest. The scandal grew until it consumed him, proving Rumi’s wisdom: the false always troubles, always corrodes, always leads to collapse. A troubled heart cannot endure.

Rumi’s teaching is not only for rulers and kings, but for each of us. When we speak half-truths to preserve appearances, when we cling to illusions rather than face reality, we feel the restlessness within. Sleep is uneasy, relationships falter, the spirit grows weary. But when we dare to live honestly—with ourselves, with others, with God—then even amidst hardship, there is peace. Truth may sting in the moment, but its gift is freedom; falsehood may soothe in the moment, but its curse is bondage.

The lesson for future generations is clear: seek truth not for pride, but for peace. Let your heart be your compass. If it is troubled, ask what falsehood you are clinging to. If it is still, joyous, and light, know that you are near to truth. Rumi’s wisdom is simple yet eternal: peace is not found in comfort, but in honesty.
