Hear the immortal words of William Shakespeare, who wrote in his tragedy Julius Caesar: “The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones.” These words, spoken by Mark Antony over the slain body of Caesar, reveal a truth as bitter as it is enduring: that the faults of men echo through generations, while their virtues are too often buried and forgotten. It is a lament for the frailty of memory, for the ease with which evil stains, and for the sorrow that goodness fades too quickly from the lips of men.

The origin of this saying lies in one of history’s great turning points—the assassination of Julius Caesar. Antony, standing before the Roman people, sought to stir their hearts. He reminded them that Caesar’s generosity, his love for Rome, and his service to the people were already being forgotten, while the claim of tyranny and ambition would live on in their judgment. Shakespeare, through Antony’s tongue, revealed a universal law: the evil that clings to a name endures beyond the grave, while the good is “interred with their bones,” hidden beneath the earth, lost to silence.

History bears out this truth again and again. Consider the fate of Richard III of England. His enemies painted him as a villain, a crooked usurper who murdered children to claim the throne. Centuries later, his remains were found, and scholars suggested he was perhaps more complex than legend declared. Yet the evil assigned to him lived through the ages, while any goodness he may have shown was buried with him. Thus, Shakespeare’s warning echoes: memory clings to evil like ivy on a ruined wall, but goodness fades like blossoms in the dust.

Yet there are moments when this sorrowful truth has been resisted. Think of Nelson Mandela, who suffered long years in prison. Many called him a criminal and a rebel in his time. But when he emerged, his deeds of forgiveness and reconciliation shone so brightly that his goodness outlived his bones. Here, we see the possibility that men and women, through extraordinary grace, may reverse the law that Shakespeare laments. For though evil spreads easily, goodness that is fierce, generous, and enduring may break through the silence of death.

The wisdom of Shakespeare’s line, however, is not merely to mourn this injustice, but to warn us: what we do in life will echo after us, and we cannot choose how the world will remember us. If our evil deeds are lasting, then we must take care to sow as little of them as possible. And if our goodness is fragile, then we must labor to make it stronger, to record it, to pass it on in living memory. Evil is loud; good must be made louder.

The lesson, then, is clear: live in such a way that your good cannot be buried. Let your acts of kindness and justice be written into the lives of others, not merely carved upon tombstones. Do not be content with fleeting virtue; strive to create goodness so enduring that it cannot be silenced. For though men are quick to speak of faults, they also cling to stories of extraordinary grace, if such stories are strong enough to outlast the grave.

Therefore, O listener, heed this wisdom. Do not leave your legacy to chance. Know that the evil you do will surely linger—so guard yourself, restrain your malice, and curb your pride. And as for your good, pour it forth in such measure that it cannot be hidden, but will be remembered by generations. Teach your children, write your truth, build your deeds into the lives of others. For though Shakespeare mourns that good is “interred with the bones,” you may live so that your good rises from the earth and endures like a star in the night sky.
