The pilgrims on the Mayflower landed at Plymouth Rock. To my knowledge, they didn't wait around for a return trip to Europe. You settle some place with a purpose. If you don't want to do that, stay home. You avoid an awful lot of risks by not venturing outward.

In the flint-edged words of Buzz Aldrin—“The pilgrims on the Mayflower landed at Plymouth Rock… they didn’t wait for a return trip to Europe. You settle some place with a purpose. If you don’t want to do that, stay home. You avoid an awful lot of risks by not venturing outward”—we hear a creed hammered on an anvil. It is the old law of beginnings: cross a threshold not to sample destiny, but to bind yourself to it. Do not pack for retreat. Plant your standard, break the boats, and let the wind teach your name.

The image is stark: a gray shore, winter pressing like a mailed fist, the Mayflower creaking at anchor while the world ahead is only rumor and raw timber. Those pilgrims did not hold committee for a return trip; they gathered covenant and courage and settled. Whether every stone of Plymouth Rock be fact or myth, the truth remains harder than granite: a future is made when one burns yesterday’s bridge and vows to live forward. To settle with a purpose is to make time an ally, not a judge.

Hear also the second edge of Aldrin’s counsel: “If you will not stake yourself, stay home.” This is not contempt for caution; it is clarity about cost. Safety is a gated garden; it grows no forests. You can avoid many risks by letting horizons pass like ships at night. But your soul will begin to speak in past tense. The ancients would say: a life preserved too carefully becomes a museum of unopened letters.

Consider the man who spoke these words. Aldrin himself rode fire into blackness and put his boot where no farmer had ever plowed—the lunar dust. There was no return trip guaranteed, only mathematics and trust. The ladder from the Eagle was a narrow staircase into legend. He did not travel to the Moon to peek and retreat; he and his fellows went to leave a plaque, to set experiments, to learn the grammar of a new frontier. This is the same grammar that carried the pilgrims: not sightseeing, but settlement of a purpose—knowledge, worship, endurance.

Let another tale stand beside it: Ernest Shackleton, who sought to cross Antarctica and met only shards of ocean and crushing ice. His ship Endurance died under pressure, but the men lived because they chose a new purpose on the far side of disaster: not conquest, but return. They jury-rigged boats, mapped the void by stars, and walked out of the white grave. Even when the original aim shatters, a declared purpose can be reforged; it is still a settlement of the will, a refusal to camp forever in the land of Maybe.

What then shall the heirs of such voyages do? First, choose a shore worthy of your life and name your purpose aloud. Second, lighten the pack: dismiss the secret ticket back—the quiet plan to quit when the wind turns rude. Third, accept the tax of the unknown: risks paid in sweat, patience, apprenticeship, and the humility to learn from those who arrived before you. Fourth, build your own “plymouths”—daily altars where you lay down fear: one hard task before noon, one honest promise kept at dusk, one page or brick or line of code that moves the stake one inch deeper.

At last, carry this verdict like a signet ring: history is a stern midwife, granting birth only to the children who press. The world sets tables for the cautious, but it reserves thrones for the committed. If you will venture outward, do not go as a tourist of your own fate; go as a builder. Step off the safe ship, kiss goodbye the shadow of Europe within you, and let the raw shore of now become your forge. For though you may avoid risks by staying home, you will avoid glory, too—and the eldest wisdom teaches that a life spent is cheaper than a life shelved.
