Time and space always change, but there is something which is eternal and changeless. For example, the world and time, past or future, nothing exists for us in sleep. But we exist. Let us try to find out that which is changeless and which always exists.
Host: The soft stillness in the room sets the tone for a conversation that seems to hover between the profound and the mysterious. The evening light casts gentle shadows, and Jack and Jeeny sit quietly, reflecting on the quote from Ramana Maharshi. The idea of something eternal and changeless amid the ever-shifting nature of time and space invites a deep, almost spiritual contemplation.
Jeeny: "Ramana Maharshi once said, 'Time and space always change, but there is something which is eternal and changeless. For example, the world and time, past or future, nothing exists for us in sleep. But we exist. Let us try to find out that which is changeless and which always exists.' I find that both mysterious and comforting. He’s talking about the search for something eternal, something that exists beyond the limitations of time and space. What do you think he’s referring to—what do you think exists beyond all of that?"
Jack: He looks out the window for a moment, as if searching for the right words. "I think Maharshi is pointing to something deeply spiritual. We experience time and space, of course, but they’re fleeting, ever-changing. When we sleep, we lose touch with the physical world. Time stops, and we are momentarily disconnected from our daily reality. Yet, we still exist—there’s still a sense of self, even when everything around us is paused." He leans forward, his tone quiet but thoughtful. "Perhaps what he's speaking to is that sense of presence—the part of us that exists beyond the tangible, beyond the world of time, that remains constant. It’s like there’s something within us that doesn’t change, no matter how much time passes."
Jeeny: "It’s like there’s an inner essence or core that remains untouched by the chaos of the world. We can experience changes in our bodies, our circumstances, our relationships, but there’s something deep within us that continues, unchanged. It’s that sense of being—not just doing, not just thinking, but existing in the purest, most fundamental way." She smiles softly, as if beginning to understand the depth of the quote. "Maybe it’s the soul, or the consciousness, or simply our connection to something greater than ourselves. In sleep, when everything else fades away, we still exist in some form. That’s what makes us eternal."
Jack: "I think you’re right. Maharshi’s words point to a part of us that’s beyond the physical realm, beyond the external world. In meditation or deep reflection, we can sometimes touch that essence, the part of ourselves that doesn’t change. It’s hard to put into words, but I think it’s the awareness within us, the part that observes everything without judgment or attachment. We see the world change, we experience it, but there’s a deeper part of us that’s always present, regardless of what’s happening in the world around us." He leans back, the thought clearly settling in his mind. "That might be what Maharshi means when he says there’s something eternal and changeless. It’s that awareness that witnesses everything but isn’t affected by it."
Jeeny: "It’s almost like we’re both a part of the world and separate from it at the same time. The world moves, time flows, but within us is this core of awareness, this sense of being that remains constant. And the more we connect with that, the more we can see the world for what it truly is—not as something to fear or cling to, but as a part of this greater flow of existence." Her voice softens. "It’s comforting to think that even when everything else changes, we have something within us that stays grounded, something that’s truly ours, untouched by the passing of time."
Host: There is a quiet peace between them now, the air filled with the resonance of Ramana Maharshi’s words. The world outside continues on, but inside, Jack and Jeeny have touched on something deeper, a truth that transcends time and space—a presence that is always with them, constant and eternal, no matter what changes around them.
As the evening settles into a comfortable stillness, their words linger in the air: that there is something within us, beyond the temporary and the fleeting, that is changeless and always exists. It is the essence of our being, the awareness that witnesses all, and remains untouched by the world’s shifting currents.
In this moment, they understand that even in the midst of change, there is something deeper that can never be lost, something that is eternal and true.
