Matt Doherty – Life, Career & Highlights
Early Life & Background
Matthew James Doherty was born on 16 January 1992 in Swords, County Dublin, Ireland. His father is Irish, while his mother has Dutch-Indonesian heritage, giving him eligibility to represent multiple nationalities.
Club Career
Wolverhampton Wanderers (First Spell)
Doherty joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2010 from Irish side Bohemians after impressing during a preseason game. He went on loan spells to Hibernian in Scotland and Bury in England early on to gain first-team experience. Over time he became a regular for Wolves. Under his tenure, Wolves achieved promotions — e.g. from League One back toward the Premier League.
Move to Tottenham & Atlético Madrid
In August 2020, Doherty transferred to Tottenham Hotspur for a fee in the region of £13–15 million. While at Spurs, he had to compete for the right-back spot, and also faced injury challenges (for example a medial collateral ligament injury). In January 2023, Tottenham mutually agreed to terminate his contract, allowing him to join Atlético Madrid briefly.
Return to Wolves
Later in 2023, Doherty returned to Wolverhampton Wanderers on a free transfer, beginning his second spell at the club. Upon his return, he scored in his EFL Cup return match and, in December 2023, netted a winning goal against Chelsea.
International Career
Doherty represented Republic of Ireland at youth levels before making his senior debut in 2018. He has earned over 50 caps for Ireland and scored several goals. In March 2023, he captained Ireland for the first time in a friendly vs. Latvia. Doherty also received a red card in Ireland’s Euro 2024 qualifying match vs Greece, marking his first international sending-off.
