Michael Bradley Enzi (commonly known as Mike Enzi) was a prominent American politician who represented the State of Wyoming as a U.S. Senator from 1997 to 2021. Over nearly a quarter century in the Senate, Enzi became known for his conservative principles, commitment to Wyoming’s interests, and steady approach to governance. His life encompassed small-town roots, business ventures, and a long political journey.

Early Life and Family

Michael B. Enzi was born on February 1, 1944 in Bremerton, Washington. His parents were Elmer J. Enzi (1914–1988) and Dorothy Bradley. Though born in Washington, he was raised in Thermopolis, Wyoming.

He graduated from Sheridan High School in 1962. In 1966, he earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting from George Washington University. He furthered his education with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in retail marketing from the University of Denver in 1968.

In June 1969, Enzi married Diana Buckley, and the couple had three children.

Early Career and Private Sector

After completing his education, Enzi settled in Gillette, Wyoming, where he and his wife operated shoe stores in Wyoming and Montana. He also worked in accounting roles and had ties to the energy industry.

Between 1967 and 1973, he served in the Wyoming Air National Guard (or National Guard).

Political Career

Local and State Politics

Enzi’s entry into public service began at the local level. At the encouragement of Senator Alan Simpson, he ran for Mayor of Gillette, Wyoming, in 1974, defeating the incumbent, and served two terms through 1982.

Later, he was elected to the Wyoming House of Representatives from Campbell County (1987–1991). Then, in December 1991, he moved to the Wyoming State Senate (24th district) to fill a vacancy and served in that capacity until 1996.

During his tenure in the state legislature, he served on committees such as Education, Mines & Minerals, and Revenue, and held leadership roles.

U.S. Senate (1997–2021)

In 1996, Enzi ran for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Alan Simpson and won. He took office as Senator from Wyoming on January 3, 1997. Over the years, he was reelected in 2002, 2008, and 2014.

While in the Senate, Enzi chaired or was ranking member on several key committees:

• Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP)

• Budget Committee (serving as Chair in later Congresses)

He also participated in debates and legislation on energy, education, commerce, and fiscal policy.

On May 5, 2019, Enzi announced he would not seek reelection in 2020, and he left the Senate on January 3, 2021.

On July 23, 2021, while bicycling near Gillette, Wyoming, he was involved in an accident. He suffered severe injuries, including a broken neck and multiple ribs. He was flown to Loveland, Colorado, and passed away on July 26, 2021, at the age of 77.
