Pratibha Patil
Pratibha Patil is an Indian politician who served as the 12th President of India, from 2007 to 2012. She was born on December 19, 1934, in Nathdwara, Rajasthan. Patil was the first woman to hold the office of President in India, marking a historic moment in the country's political landscape.
Before becoming President, Patil had a long and distinguished career in both the state and national political arenas. She served in various roles, including as the Governor of Rajasthan from 2004 to 2007, and as a Member of the Rajya Sabha (the upper house of India's Parliament) for many years. She was also the Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha and held positions in both the Congress Party and the government.
During her tenure as President, Patil's role was largely ceremonial, as is the case with most presidents of India, with executive powers resting in the hands of the Prime Minister and the Cabinet. However, her presidency marked several milestones, including her advocacy for women's empowerment and social welfare programs. Patil's time in office also saw a focus on rural development, education, and strengthening India's global diplomatic relationships.
Patil had a strong educational background, having completed her studies in law and political science. She worked as a lawyer before entering politics and had a long-standing connection with the Indian National Congress (INC).
Her tenure as President was generally seen as a period of stability, although it was not without criticism, especially regarding some of her appointments and decisions. She retired from active politics after completing her term as President and has remained a respected figure in Indian politics.
