Creativity is the power to connect the seemingly unconnected.
William Plomer, poet and prophet of the imagination, once revealed a hidden law of the spirit: “Creativity is the power to connect the seemingly unconnected.” In this saying, he declares that creativity is not merely invention out of nothing, but the divine ability to weave together fragments that appear separate, to find hidden harmonies where others see only chaos. It is the art of perceiving bridges where others see only chasms.
The essence of power in creativity lies not in force but in vision. To connect what is seemingly unconnected is to pierce beyond appearances, to uncover truths that lie hidden in plain sight. The scientist does this when he unites numbers with nature; the artist does this when she joins colors with emotion; the philosopher does this when he binds thought to meaning. This act of connection is the spark of genius, the birth of beauty, the dawn of wisdom.
History bears luminous witness. When Isaac Newton saw an apple fall, he did not see only fruit and gravity, but connected that humble fall to the dance of the stars. In uniting earth with heaven, he revealed a law that governed both. Likewise, Leonardo da Vinci, gazing upon the flight of birds, connected the curve of wings to the dream of human flight, sketching designs centuries before the sky was conquered. In each case, creativity was the power to see unity in the disjointed, order in the scattered.
So too in literature, Shakespeare drew from the histories of kings, the myths of Rome, and the passions of the street to weave plays that spoke to the eternity of human nature. He connected the worlds of high and low, past and present, tragedy and comedy, and in this fusion created works that endure forever. His genius lay not in invention alone, but in the ability to bind together what seemed far apart.
O children of tomorrow, remember Plomer’s teaching: seek always to see beyond division. In every problem, look for the unseen thread; in every mystery, search for the hidden link. Creativity is not the privilege of the few, but the birthright of all who dare to see connections. To connect the seemingly unconnected is to call forth new worlds, to transform confusion into clarity, and to bring forth beauty from the fragments of life. This is the true power of the human spirit, and it is yours to wield.
