The physical ego serves as its own worst enemy when, by delusive
The physical ego serves as its own worst enemy when, by delusive material behavior, it eclipses its true nature as the ever blessed soul.
Hear now the words of Paramahansa Yogananda, sage of the East, who beheld the truth of man not only with eyes of flesh but with the vision of the spirit: “The physical ego serves as its own worst enemy when, by delusive material behavior, it eclipses its true nature as the ever blessed soul.” In this utterance, there is a teaching as sharp as a sword and as gentle as the dawn. For it tells us that the ego, which clings to possessions, titles, and fleeting desires, becomes the prison of the very self it seeks to protect. What it calls freedom is bondage; what it calls gain is loss.
The ego is that restless voice within, ever whispering: “I am the body. I am the wealth. I am the praise of men.” It blinds the soul with glittering illusions, making man chase shadows across the desert of existence. Yet Yogananda teaches us that the soul is far greater, untouched by the dust of desire, radiant as the sun. When the ego rises, it casts its shadow upon this inner light, and man forgets his eternal nature. He lives as a beggar though he is heir to a kingdom, starved though seated at the banquet of the divine.
Consider the tale of Emperor Ashoka, conqueror of India. At first, his ego drove him to war, and in his pride he claimed kingdoms, slaughtered armies, and filled the earth with grief. But standing amid the bodies at Kalinga, he saw the ruin his delusion had wrought. In that moment, his heart awakened, and he turned from the ego’s path of conquest to the soul’s path of compassion. He embraced the teachings of the Buddha, spread mercy instead of terror, and became remembered not for his cruelty but for his wisdom. Thus is Yogananda’s lesson confirmed: the ego eclipses the soul, but the soul waits ever patiently to shine forth when man turns inward.
The meaning, O seekers, is that true identity is not in the mirror of the flesh but in the eternal radiance of the soul. The body withers, the titles fade, the riches scatter, but the soul is “ever blessed,” untouched by time and circumstance. To live for ego is to chase dust; to live for soul is to taste immortality. This is no mere philosophy — it is a truth written in every life that has burned with meaning. Those who sought only material gain vanished into obscurity; those who lived for the higher self remain as lights for the ages.
Yet we must not imagine that the ego is an enemy outside ourselves. It is subtle, cunning, ever waiting in the heart. It can clothe itself in virtue, in false humility, even in piety. That is why Yogananda calls it “delusive.” It deceives not by brute force, but by disguise. It tells you, “I am the soul,” when in truth it is the shadow. Only through self-knowledge, prayer, meditation, and the discipline of the mind can man pierce this veil and see himself as he truly is.
The lesson for us is this: do not measure your worth by possessions, applause, or outward triumphs. Measure it by the peace in your heart, the love you give, the truth you embody. Train yourself daily to remember: “I am not the ego; I am the soul.” When anger rises, recall the stillness of the spirit. When envy gnaws, recall the abundance of the divine. When pride swells, recall the humility of sages who saw themselves as servants of all. In doing this, you weaken the chains of ego and strengthen the wings of soul.
Therefore, take these practical actions: Each day, sit in silence and remind yourself of your eternal self. Practice acts of kindness that yield no applause, so the ego may starve while the soul may grow. Let go of one attachment, one craving, one vain pursuit, and replace it with a practice of service or reflection. And when the world tempts you with glitter and noise, retreat inward and listen to the quiet voice of the soul, which whispers of peace, unity, and eternal joy.
So remember Yogananda’s warning: the physical ego is not your friend but your deceiver. Do not let it eclipse your birthright as the ever blessed soul. Live as one who has awakened to his true nature, and your life will not be wasted in shadows. It will blaze like a beacon across time, guiding others from illusion into light.
